Demand for the Gold American Eagle bullion coin remained strong into its second year of availability. Today, the 1987 1 oz Gold American Eagle Coin is available to you online at Silver.com.

Production of bullion and proof coinage often falls off in the second year of availability as the novelty of a new product begins to wear off. That doesn’t mean however that 1987 was an inconsequential year in the Gold Eagle series. The bullion coins featured all four weights, 1 oz and three fractional weights, immediately. The proof version added a ½ oz option in 1987.

All 1987 1 oz Gold American Eagle Coins in this Silver.com listing are in BU condition. Coins in BU condition feature no signs of wear and tear, however, you may notice minor flaws ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks from the production process at the mint.

Although 1987 was a long time ago, these 1987 1 oz Gold American Eagle coins from the bullion issue remain among the highest in mintage figures in the program. More than three decades of availability have passed, but the 1987 mintage of 1.045 million coins is sixth highest in the program’s history.

On the obverse of all Gold American Eagle coins is the image of Liberty created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The Irish-American artist and engraver was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to come up with a new design for American coins, and the Liberty design he created was on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.

The reverse of 1987 1 oz Gold American Eagle coins includes the design of a family of American bald eagles. This image was created by Miley Busiek specifically for the Gold American Eagle series and features a nest full of hatchlings with a female eagle watching over the group while a male flies overhead.
