Proof Silver American Eagle coins have been struck at three of the four facilities within the United States Mint system to date. The coins were originally struck at San Francisco (1986-1992), before production moved to Philadelphia (1993-2000). The coins available through this Silver.com product listing were the first proof coins struck at the West Point Mint, which maintains responsibility for production today.
When a coin is labeled deep-cameo, or DCAM, it identifies the unique finish of the coin. These proofs have a strong, frosted finish on the design set that creates an appearance of the image floating over the coin’s deeply mirrored, clear background field. Only a select few coins earn the highest grade from the PCGS, adding value to this product.
Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty image graces the obverse of these coins. A student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Weinman’s image is considered one of the finest ever featured on an American coin. US Mint chief engraver John Mercanti developed the heraldic eagle image specifically for use on the Silver American Eagle coin.
These coins are not only special for the first-time appearance of the “W” mint mark, but also because they represent the 15th edition of the coins produced. The grade and condition of the coins in this product listing adds value and creates instant demand.
