In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt turned to an aging Augustus Saint-Gaudens and asked him to help redesign the look of American gold coins. Saint-Gaudens accepted the president’s commission, and by 1907 had a design for Lady Liberty unlike any seen before on an American coin.
When the United States Mint sought to introduced an official gold bullion coin for the nation nearly 80 years later, it turned to Saint-Gaudens’ image as a source of inspiration. His iconic design was revamped and modernized for use on the Gold American Eagle nearly 50 years after going out of circulation on the $20 Gold Double Eagle.
Each of the 2003-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagles in this Silver.com listing is in perfect PR70 condition. This indicates a coin with its full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws of any kind. The deep-cameo designation is reserved for coins with contrasting design set and background finishes, which combine to create the illusion of the design floating above the coin’s surface.
The obverse face of all Gold American Eagle coins bears Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty design. On the reverse is the image of a male bald eagle flying over a nest, which contains hatchlings guarded by a vigilant female bald eagle. This design was finished in 1986 by sculptor Miley Busiek, who had been commissioned by the Mint to create an exclusive design for Gold American Eagle coins.
