America is a nation of varied natural wonders. From the eastern shores of the country to its far-western territories, the United States has natural wonders that have to be explored to be believed. The United States Mint was authorized under the America the Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008 to release quarters and 5 oz silver coins each year until one coin has been released to represent a national park in each US state and territory. The 2015 5 oz Denali ATB Silver Coin represents Alaska’s Denali National Park in the series.
The 5 oz Denali ATB Silver Coin was first released in 2012 as the 15th overall America the Beautiful coin in the series, and the final for 2012. Other coins released that same year represented El Yunque (Puerto Rico), Chaco Culture (New Mexico), Acadia (Maine), and Hawaii Volcanoes. The 2015 5 oz Denali ATB Silver Coin is struck in .999 pure silver and has a massive diameter of three inches.
Denali National Park and Preserve encompasses 6 million acres of forests, mountains, and glaciers in Alaska. The park was established in 1917 to protect wildlife populations in the region, including grizzly bears, caribou, and Dall sheep. A 2 million acre expansion of the park was approved in 1980, with some 16% of that expansion consisting of glaciers.
The reverse side of the 2015 5 oz Denali ATB Silver Coin features the stunning image of Denali with Mount McKinley rising up in the background. In the foreground, a Dall sheep is seen standing at the base of the mountain which rises an astonishing 20,320 feet above sea level. Engravings surrounding the image include the year of minting (2012), “Alaska,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and “Denali.”
On the obverse side of the coin is the left-portrait image of President George Washington that has been featured on US quarters for decades. Engravings on this side of the coin include “United States of America,” “In God We Trust,” and “Liberty.”
