As Mexico marked the centennial of the start of its War of Independence with Spain in 1920, the nation erected statues and introduced commemorative coins to honor the event. In the center of Mexico City, a statue of Winged Victory was unveiled. At the Mexican Mint, the gold Centenario coin was released bearing the angel’s image.

Each of the coins available in this product listing was inspired in its design by the Centenario. These coins are available today in near-perfect condition. These coins have their full, original luster, and no more than two detracting flaws, blemishes, or contact marks.

On the obverse side is the image of Winged Victory atop a pillar. Rising in the background are twin volcanic peaks with a deep history in ancient Aztec lore. The coin’s weight, face value, purity, and content are displayed on this side, along with the “OM” mint mark.

The reverse side bears the coat of arms for Mexico. A modern coat of arms is featured in the middle, with 10 different historic versions of the seal surrounding the modern-day version. Engravings include “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” and a wreath around the latest version of the coat of arms.

All of these coins are struck by the Mexican Mint with the authority of Banco de Mexico. Founded in 1535, the Mexican Mint is one of the oldest facilities in the world.
