Gold American Eagle coins debuted in 1986 with bullion and proof versions available. The bullion coin was immediately available in all four weights; 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz. However, the proof coin was only available in the popular 1 oz weight at first. The fractional-weight coins were phased in during 1987 and 1988.
Throughout the course of the Gold American Eagle’s history at the US Mint, mintage levels for the four coins have varied. When first introduced, all four weights were struck with relatively similar numbers. Over time, the 1 oz weight became the clear favorite among most, and its mintage numbers were often higher. As of 2014 though, the 1/10 oz coin has rivaled that popularity because of the coin’s smaller size and more affordable price.
All 2016 1/10 oz Gold American Eagle coins in this product listing are Mint State 70 products from the NGC. Coins with this certification are considered perfect, exhibiting their full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws.
On the obverse of the coin you’ll find the image of Lady Liberty that was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, perhaps the most gifted coin designer in American history. Artist and sculptor Miley Busiek was commissioned to create the bald eagle image that graces the reverse.
The United States Mint celebrates the 30th anniversary of the American Eagle program by continuing its traditions, striking the Gold American Eagle in all three versions and four available weights.
