Lunar Series II coins were introduced in 2008 with the Year of the Rat. The Perth Mint’s original Lunar Series program started in 1996 with the same Year of the Rat product. The coin program runs in a 12-year cycle that mimics the 12-year cycle of the Zodiac, and each new coin features a new image of the animal represented in a given year.
These 2016 ¼ oz Proof Colorized Gold Australian Monkey Coins have natural hues and tones added to the reverse design that help bring the images on the face to life. Ing Ing Jong’s distinctive Gold Australian Monkey design is enhanced with brown and white colors on the monkey’s body, while the peach dangling from a tree branch above has been colorized as well.
On the reverse side of each coin is the unique Year of the Monkey design. While the background and engravings on the coin remain finished in 24-karat gold, the aforementioned colors have been added to the monkey and the tree branch hanging from above.
The obverse face has no colors added to the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Each coin in this Silver.com product listing is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. This indicates a coin with no signs of wear and tear, though breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks may be visible.
Perth Mint is Australia’s oldest operating facility, having opened its doors in 1898. Once part of Britain’s Royal Mint system, it is now a state-owned entity of Western Australia.
