Gold American Eagle coins feature four total weights, unlike its Silver Eagle counterpart which just has a one-ounce option. The four weights in the Gold Eagle series include 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. However, these weights were phased in over time in proof unlike the bullion version.

All four weights debuted in 1986 in the bullion version, but only the 1 oz proof was available that first year. The 1/2 oz Gold American Eagle debuted on its own in 1987, and was followed in 1988 by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz options. For a period of time in the 1980s and 1990s, the 1/2 oz was the most popular option in the Gold Eagle series.

On the obverse of all Gold American Eagle coins you’ll find the image of Liberty. Depicted with her hair and robe flowing freely, she strides confidently forward from the nation’s capital with her guiding torch held aloft. Created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this design is considered the greatest in American history and featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.

The reverse of the 2017-W 1/2 oz Proof Gold American Eagle includes an exclusive design from sculptor and artist Miley Busiek. She created an image of a male bald eagle flying over the nest with a group of hatchlings under the watchful eye of a female eagle below. This has featured on the reverse of the Gold Eagles since the coins were introduced in 1986.
