After more than 150 years as a British Crown Colony, the Republic of Sierra Leone gained its independence in 1961. As is the case with many nations, the road to independence was a long one and did not occur overnight. The process of independence stretched out for nearly 15 years from the moment the Duke of Kent handed over royal instruments to the then-Governor of Sierra Leone in 1956 until the formation of the formal Republic of Sierra Leone in 1971.
